250th Anniversary of James Hogg's Birth

James Hogg Lamlash House

In the 250th anniversary since the birth of James Hogg in 1770, we are privileged to have a stained glass window at Lamlash House, Newmilns which is dedicated to Hogg, the Ettrick Shepherd.

Hogg was born near Ettrick in Scotland and was a Scottish poet, novelist and essayist.

Hogg died in 1835 and the commemorative window at Lamlash House was installed 55 years later, on the 120th anniversary of Hogg’s birth when Lamlash House (formerly Bank House) was completed in 1890.

The window has had a mixed bag of fortunes over the years having been badly damaged in the past. However, the image of Hogg was researched and painstakingly restored by experts at the Stained Glass Design Partnership in Kilmaurs and is now protected from further damage and enjoyed by those who visit the house.

The Hogg window is one of a series of windows which depict images of Sir Walter Scott, Allan Ramsay, Robert Tannahill and Robert Burns which were created specifically for Lamlash House between 1889 and 1890 by renowned stained glass artist Stephen Adam.

“A shepherd may be a very able, trusty, and good shepherd, without a sweetheart - better, perhaps, than with one. But what is he without his dog?” JAMES HOGG
