Lamlash House Restoration Update: Storm Eowyn Repairs and Event Schedule Changes

In January 2025, Storm Eowyn swept across the UK with record-breaking winds, causing widespread damage. Unfortunately, Lamlash House was not spared: the storm left us with significant roof and stonework damage, leading to water ingress in several areas of the house. Since then, we have been working patiently behind the scenes-navigating contractor backlogs to get started on repairing the property.

We are pleased to share that restoration works are now underway, and we want to keep our guests and community updated on our progress, what these repairs involve, and how they affect our event schedule.

The Impact of Storm Eowyn

Storm Eowyn, the most powerful storm to hit the UK in over a decade, brought severe winds and heavy rain, resulting in extensive damage to roofs, masonry, and windows across the region. At Lamlash House, the storm’s force caused:

·         Dislodged and broken roof slates

·         Damaged leadwork and flashing to the main flat roof area

·         Mortar loss

·         Water ingress affecting several internal areas

Restoration Works Underway

1. Roofing and Leadwork Repairs
Our first priority has been to address the roof. Professional roofing contractors are now on site, undertaking:

·         Leadwork repairs to the flat roof to restore damaged areas.

·         Slate repairs, matching and replacing missing or broken slates to maintain the roof’s integrity and historic appearance.

2. Stonework and Mortar Repairs
Storm-driven rain and wind caused some of the mortar joints to erode. Restoration includes:

·         Filling minor spalled areas with colour-matched repair mortar to the walls and chimneys.

·         Repointing mortar joints to improve weather resistance.

3. Internal Decoration and Restoration
Alongside the external repairs, we have a programme of internal works planned to address areas affected by water ingress. This includes:

·         Repairing and redecorating internal spaces, including several ceilings.

·         Implementing safety measures to protect guests and staff during the works.

Temporary Changes to Events at Lamlash House

While we are grateful that restoration works are now underway, we want to be transparent about how this impacts our usual calendar of events. Due to the essential repairs, the number of private and public events we are able to host in the coming months will be greatly reduced.

Our foremost responsibility is to ensure that Lamlash House is fully wind and water-tight before the arrival of the autumn and winter months. During this time, certain areas of the house may be inaccessible, and we must limit the number and size of events to ensure public safety and allow our contractors to work efficiently.

We understand this may be disappointing for those who look forward to our regular events and we sincerely apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.

Our Commitment to You

Please know that this decision has not been made lightly. Our priority is to safeguard the future of Lamlash House and ensure no further damage takes place to the fabric of the building. We are working closely with our contractors to complete the repairs as swiftly as possible, and we are committed to keeping you updated throughout the process.

As soon as the works are finished, we will be returning to our full schedule of public events, along with our private events.

Thank You for Your Patience

We deeply appreciate your understanding and patience during this challenging time.

If you have any questions about upcoming events or bookings, please don’t hesitate to contact us.

Thank you for standing with us as we restore Lamlash House for the future.
